In 2014, I researched the issue of saving the girl child, focusing on where the highest number of abortions occur. Surprisingly, the biggest challenge was in urban areas because cities are still unsafe for girls in many ways. This is largely due to the concentration of property and material wealth in cities, where middle-class families often feel insecure about having daughters.

Unlike poorer families who value daughters for household help and work, many urban families see girls as a financial burden. This mindset is a key reason why cities are still unsafe for girls, creating a hidden crisis that needs urgent attention.

The Emotional Struggles Urban Girls Face

But danger to girls in cities isn’t just about physical safety. I spoke to urban children struggling with anxiety, depression, and confusion. Their reasons? Family conflicts, pressure to succeed, and the overwhelming presence of social media.

Many girls live in well-off families, with all material comforts, but feel lost emotionally. They don’t always get the love or guidance they need to understand what’s right or wrong. This emotional gap makes cities still unsafe for girls in a deeper sense.

Why So Many Awareness Programs Miss the Mark

Here’s an irony: most awareness efforts focus on rural or slum areas. While those places have challenges, the unique problems urban girls face remain largely ignored.

Because of this, many city girls go unheard, unsupported, and vulnerable. If we want real change, we must ask ourselves—why are cities still unsafe for girls, and how can we reach those who live there?

A Ray of Hope: Education Reform

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is taking a big step toward change. They are introducing new mental health and gender-sensitivity programs in schools. This is promising because schools can become safe spaces where girls feel protected and valued.

These changes could start to heal why cities are still unsafe for girls by helping children understand respect, equality, and emotional well-being.
